How to treat small vessels on the face?

There are several options. ThermaVein, laser or IPL.

Here at Dr K’s Clinic we use ThermaVein. This treatment uses thermocoagulation to remove facial thread veins, spider veins, skin tags, milia, and other small vascular blemishes. A fine sterile needle when placed on the skin, delivers a low current to the vein, causing it to collapse and shut down. This means the thread vein disappears instantly. This non-surgical, non-invasive procedure is considered a safe, effective, and gentle option for various skin types, with minimal downtime and no scarring or bruising. Laser and IPL target the colour red and so heat up the blood in the vessels. Unfortunately, you may need a few sessions of IPL for this to be effective. Laser can be very uncomfortable and good quality laser treatments are expensive. ThermaVein is relatively more cost effective and is usually effective after just 1 session.

How does ThermaVein work?

1. Thermocoagulation:

The treatment uses a process called thermocoagulation, where a low-frequency current (around 4MHz) is delivered through a micro-thin needle sitting on top of the skin. This is a sterile single use needle and is encased in a sheath, which protects the skin and makes the treatment almost pain free.

2. Sealing the vein:

This current gently seals the walls of the vein, causing it to instantly constrict and disappear from view.

3. Permanent removal:

The sealed vein is then permanently removed through the natural healing process.

What other facial blemishes does ThermaVein treat?

ThermaVein is effective for a variety of skin conditions, including:

-       Facial thread veins also known as telangectasia. However, if these are caused by Rosacea then this needs to be controlled prior to treatment for long term effectiveness.

-       Spider veins

-       Most vascular blemishes

-       Milia (milk spots)

-       Skin tags

-       Cherry angiomas and Campbell de Morgan spots (red dots)

The benefits of ThermaVein:

Instant and permanent results:

The treatment provides immediate and lasting removal of the treated veins and blemishes.

Minimally invasive:

The procedure involves a small needle and causes no trauma to the surrounding tissue.

Suitable for all skin types:

ThermaVein is safe and effective for all skin types, including sensitive skin. It is even safe for pigmented skin, however, please get a thorough consultation and assessment before booking a treatment, as there are some skin types that can still react and cause pigmentation. Dr Maeve can assess you and prevent pigmentation from occurring, if this describes your skin.

Minimal downtime:

You can typically resume normal activities immediately after the treatment.

Painless:

The procedure is relatively painless. Skin numbing cream can cause the vessels to constrict. Please ask for an opinion as numbing cream can be used inside the nose for example.

No scarring:

The treatment leaves the skin blemish-free without scarring. However, most people will have some redness in the area as the body resorbs the redundant vessel. This usually settles by your 6 week review.

How is the procedure carried out?

You should have a consultation to assess whether your concerns are amenable to treatment with ThermaVein or if Dr Maeve needs to refer you elsewhere. There have been instances when Dr Maeve has picked up a skin cancer and referred, so it is important to seek the opinion of a qualified experienced medical professional for any lesion removal.

If your thread veins are deemed suitable for treatment, the skin is cleaned and the small needle “hovers” over the blood vessel and steadily moves to the origin of the vessel. There will be a feeling of warmth during the treatment. Most people say the discomfort is around 3 out of 10. Depending on how many vessels need treating, this process is usually completed within 20 minutes.

Dr Maeve will give you a cream to apply after. This will reduce the chances of another vessel “growing” into the area. There will be a feeling of warmth in the area for around a day. The skin may crust a little and have little “scratches” visible for a few days. The treated skin may be pink for around 4-6 weeks. You will then have a follow up. In Dr K’s Clinic the second treatment is complimentary.

What is the aftercare?

As the skin is traumatised it is important to keep the area clean and dry to avoid infection.

Try to reduce exposure to circumstances when blood vessels dilate. For example, try to avoid: outdoor weathering, frequent flushing with alcohol/ spicy foods, sunbeds, saunas, steam rooms, hot baths and harsh exfoliation etc.

Always protect the skin with a good broad spectrum SPF.
